Things to Do in Winter Park, CO This Fall

There’s something about fall in Winter Park that feels a little different.
Summer has its long sunny days, mountain biking, hiking, and patios packed with people. Winter, of course, brings the snow and everything that comes with ski season. But fall? Fall is when things seem to slow down.
The mornings are crisp. The aspens start turning that unmistakable shade of gold. You can spend a few hours on a trail, grab a local beer afterward, and still have plenty of time to wander around town without feeling like you need to stick to a schedule.
If you're looking for things to do in Winter Park, CO this fall, our advice is pretty simple: don't over plan it.
Leave some room to see where the day takes you.
Start With the Aspens
It's hard to talk about fall in Colorado without talking about the leaves.
Around Winter Park, the changing aspens put on one of the best shows of the year. One week, everything is still green. Then, seemingly overnight, the hillsides start turning gold.
The nice thing is that you don't have to be an experienced hiker to enjoy it.
The trails around Sojourn at Idlewild are an easy place to start. Grab a coffee, throw on a few layers, and head out for a morning walkthrough the trees. If you have more time and want to stretch your legs, there are plenty of longer trails around Winter Park and the Fraser Valley.
And honestly, some of the best leaf-peeping happens when you're not trying too hard to find it.
Take the scenic route. Pull over when you see a particularly good view. Stop for a photo. Keep going.
That's kind of the point.

Take the Gondola and See Winter Park From Above
If your ideal mountain adventure doesn't necessarily involve a five-hour hike, we get it.
The scenic gondola at Winter Park Resort is an easy way to get above town and take in the surrounding mountains. On a clear fall day, the views are pretty hard to beat.
You can make a morning or afternoon of it, or simply ride up, take in the scenery, and spend some time exploring before heading back into town.
It's one of those activities that works for just about everyone—and it's especially nice when you're traveling with people who don't all have the same idea of what “adventure” means.
Then Find a Good Beer
After a morning outside, we're big fans of rewarding the effort.
Luckily, Winter Park and Fraser have plenty of places to do exactly that.
Stop into a local brewery, order something seasonal, and settle in for a while. Hideaway Park Brewery is a natural stop in Winter Park, while breweries in nearby Fraser give you a few more options if you're exploring farther down the valley.
Fall is also a particularly good time for a brewery stop. The weather is cool enough to sit outside without melting, and a crisp lager or darker seasonal beer somehow tastes even better after a few hours outside.
You don't need a brewery itinerary. Just pick one you haven't tried before.
Give Yourself an Afternoon With No Plans
This might be our favorite Winter Park activity of all.
Do nothing.
Or at least, don't need to plan every minute of the day.
Spend an hour walking around downtown. Pop into a shop. Grab coffee. Find lunch. Sit outside. Enjoy.
Winter Park is small enough that you can wander around without feeling like you're missing something. And after a summer full of packed calendars and a winter that can be all about getting first tracks, fall is a pretty good excuse to take things slower.
And If You're Already Missing Summer…
We don't blame you.
If you're researching what to do in Winter Park in summer, there's a completely different side of the town waiting for you.
Summer means long days on the trails, mountain biking, fishing, golf, wildflowers, outdoor concerts, and plenty of time on patios. The mountains are green, the days stretch late into the evening, and it's easy to spend the entire day outside.
That's part of what makes Winter Park so appealing.
Every season feels a little different.
You can come for a summer hiking trip, come back for ski season, and then find yourself planning another weekend because you want to seethe aspens change in the fall.
Maybe That's Why Winter Park Is So Easy to Come Back To
We've always thought the best mountain towns are the ones that give you a reason to come back in every season.
Winter Park is one of those places.
There's plenty to do if you're looking for adventure, but there's also plenty of room to slow down. You can spend a Saturday hiking and then spend Sunday doing almost nothing.
And if you're thinking about spending more time here—not just visiting for a weekend—that's where a community like Sojourn at Idlewild starts to make sense.
Located near downtown Winter Park and Hideaway Park, Sojourn puts you close to the things that make the area special: trails, restaurants, breweries, shops, and easy access to the mountains.
The idea isn't complicated.
Have a place to come back to after a day outside.
Leave the car parked when you can.
Walk into town for dinner.
Wake up and decide what kind of day you feel like having.
Maybe it's a hike.
Maybe it's a bike ride.
Maybe it's coffee and a slow morning.
That's mountain living at its best.
The Perfect Fall Weekend in Winter Park
If we were putting together a fall weekend, it would probably look something like this:
Friday afternoon: Get into town, settle in, and head downtown for dinner and a local beer.
Saturday morning: Coffee and a hike through the aspens.
Saturday afternoon: Ride the gondola or take a scenic drive.
Saturday evening: Find a good dinner, grab another drink, and call it an early night.
Sunday morning: Sleep in. Get breakfast. Take one last walk before heading home.
Nothing too ambitious.
Nothing that requires a spreadsheet.
Just a couple of days in the mountains when the leaves are turning and the air starts to feel like fall.
And honestly, that's more than enough.
