⛳ Pole Creek Golf Club – My Favorite Mountain Course
About 10 minutes north of town in Tabernash is Pole Creek, and honestly? It blew me away.
You get three different 9-hole layouts to mix and match—Ranch, Meadow, and Ridge. I played Ridge and Meadow, and both were stunning. Elevation changes kept things interesting, but it was the views that really made it unforgettable. On the Ridge nine, there’s a par 3 that drops straight down—hit it right and the ball hangs in the air like it's on a parachute.
Bonus: The air is thin, so drives go far. (But bring water and maybe ibuprofen—my first afternoon left me more winded than expected.)
🏌️♂️ Granby Ranch – Laid-Back & Gorgeous
A short drive away is Granby Ranch Golf Course. This one’s friendlier, a little more open, and ideal if you're not in the mood to get beat up by narrow fairways or steep lies. The back nine has some holes that wind through quiet, forested areas—felt like I had the place to myself.
They also run a pretty solid golf school here, and the staff were incredibly welcoming. If you’re newer to the game or traveling with someone who is, this is the perfect course to ease into.
🌾 Grand Elk Golf Club – Scottish Vibes in the Rockies
Okay, this one surprised me. Grand Elk has a very links-style feel—almost like someone picked up a Scottish golf course and plunked it into the Rockies.
It’s a little more refined, with rolling fairways, strategic bunkering, and those signature Grand County views. I walked most of it and ended the round with a cold beer and lunch at the Grand Elk Grille. Highly recommend that combo.
🎯 Not Just Traditional Golf
What I didn’t expect was all the non-traditional golf fun around town.
At Winter Park Resort, there's a super fun 18-hole putting course with natural landscaping and mountain views. Perfect way to wind down after a hike or bike ride. Check it out on their site here.
And in Fraser, just down the road, I found the Birdie Lounge. It’s a cozy bar with indoor golf simulators—a rainy day golfer’s dream. Visit them here.
Pro Tips I Wish I Knew Earlier
- Hydrate like it’s your job. High elevation = dry air + extra fatigue.
- Pack layers. Mornings are crisp, afternoons are sunny, and mountain weather changes fast.
- Start early. Afternoon storms are common in the summer.
- Book tee times in advance, especially on weekends. Pole Creek can fill up fast.
Final Thoughts
Whether you're chasing birdies among mountain vistas or just soaking in alpine air on a putting green, Winter Park delivers a one-of-a-kind golfing adventure. With four public courses—ranging from rugged high-altitude layouts to dog-friendly town greens—you’re spoiled for choice. Add in simulator fun at the Birdie Lounge and short-game practice on the slopeside putting course, and you've got a full-on golf getaway.
Pro tip: Reserve tee times mid-morning, bring snacks and water, and it’s customary to celebrate post-round with Colorado craft brews or mountain-view dining in Fraser or Winter Park Village.
Ready to plan your tee time? Whether you crave dramatic Ridge views or the friendly local feel of WP18, Golfing in Winter Park promises scenic fairways, high-altitude challenges, and a mountain community that welcomes all.
Let me know if you’d like help booking tee times, finding lodging near the greens, or comparing course styles!
Happy golfing!
